The bamboo question


Bamboo is genuinely a fast-growing, low-water crop, and Panda are right to say so. The part that gets skipped is what happens between the plant and the fabric. Almost all "bamboo" bedding is bamboo viscose — the cellulose is dissolved in solvent, regenerated into fibre and spun. It's a manufactured fibre made from a natural feedstock, which is not the same thing as a natural fibre, and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic have taken action against brands describing it as one.

Panda's cover is a bamboo viscose and polyester blend. Polyester is polyethylene terephthalate. Plastic.

Our cover is GOTS-certified organic cotton. GOTS covers the whole chain, growing, processing, dyeing, labour standards with transfer certificates following the material at every stage. You can ask us for them and we'll send them. That's the difference between a certificate and a claim, and it's why this section is short.

Sleeping temperature

This is where the two products diverge most, and it's structural rather than a matter of quality.

Memory foam is viscoelastic: it softens in response to body heat. That's the entire mechanism behind the contouring hug. It's also why the dense structure that creates the cradle is the same structure that stops air moving through it. Gel infusion slows the build-up, it's a real intervention, not marketing but it's managing a property rather than removing it. Independent reviewers testing the Panda in warm weather report it sleeps warm despite the gel.

Latex is poured into moulds studded with pins, leaving a core riddled with vertical channels, and the material is open-cell throughout. Air moves. Heat leaves. Hour eight feels like hour one.

If you sleep cold, none of this is a problem and the Panda's warmth is a feature.

Feel: hug versus float

Memory foam is a sinking sensation. Latex is a floating one: it gives immediately under pressure and pushes back immediately when the pressure lifts. No crater to climb out of, no five-second delay when you roll over.

Which of those you want is genuinely a preference, not a quality question. If you've slept on memory foam for years and liked it, you may find latex too responsive at first. If you've ever described a memory foam bed as "hard to move around in," that's the thing latex fixes.

Where it stops being preference is depth of options. One firmness has to be a compromise that is soft enough for side sleepers and firm enough for back sleepers are different specifications. Reviews of the Panda split between "too soft" and "medium-firm," which is what a single-firmness product looks like when it meets a mixed audience. What it costs per year

The headline prices aren't comparable because the products don't last the same length of time.

Back pain and support

Pressure relief and support are two different jobs, and toppers that only do the first are where "my new topper hurt my back" comes from. A material that lets your hips settle into the softest part of the bed relieves pressure at the shoulder and loses the lumbar line at the same time.

Latex does both: it gives at the shoulder and hip while holding the midsection up. A Supportive topper suits back sleepers and anyone on a soft or ageing mattress; Plush suits side sleepers who need more give.

Natural latex is inherently resistant to dust mites, mould and mildew, where foam needs a protector to get to the same place. Our organic cotton cover is removable and washable, so the surface you actually touch stays clean.

When to buy the Panda instead

We'd rather you bought the right topper than ours:

  1. You want the memory foam hug specifically. Latex will never give you that. Wrong material for the job — buy the Panda.
  2. Your budget is under £150. At that price you can buy good memory foam. You cannot buy good latex, and thin low-density latex isn't worth having.
  3. You have a diagnosed latex allergy. Rare, and washed latex contains very little residual protein, but don't take the risk.

Why Didn't we make a memory foam topper?

Modern bedding and their marketing is full of holes and false promises.

We're here to fill the gaps.

We've got no quarrel with Panda, they build a good product and they've done more than most to get people thinking about what their bedding is made of. Our disagreement is with the material, not the brand.

Memory foam is cheaper to buy, lighter to ship and easier to market. Every commercial argument points at stocking it. We didn't, because a topper that develops a dip in four years is a repeat purchase disguised as a solution, and that's the model we started this brand to get away from.

Yes — for what they are. The Panda is a well-built gel memory foam topper with a soft bamboo-viscose cover, a properly engineered anti-slip system and a fair price. The trade-offs are the ones common to all memory foam: it sleeps warmer than open-cell materials, it takes a few seconds to respond when you move, and it will develop body impressions sooner than latex will.
