Our story · Real sleep science. No fluff

Started by a bad mattress and a good idea.

"Modern bedding is full of holes — literally, and in the marketing. We're here to fill the gaps."

Not Swiss Cheese was founded by Gurveer Sabharwal, a chartered accountant from Leeds who wrecked his back and neck on a cheap student mattress. His dad pointed him to natural latex — the same resilient material used in aircraft, race cars and medical cushioning since the early 1900s.

Within weeks the pain eased. That switch became a brand built on three things the industry kept hiding: real materials, real science, and real plain talk. No gimmicks. No fluff. No holes where it counts.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    help

What actually is natural latex, and why should I care?

It's foam made from the sap of the rubber tree, whipped and baked into a solid core. That's it. Memory foam and most cheap toppers are polyurethane, which is a petrochemical product, and the "cooling gel" versions are the same foam with gel beads mixed in. Latex behaves differently because it's a different material, not because of a marketing layer added on top.

    help

How is latex different from memory foam?

Memory foam softens under your body heat, so it has to hold that heat to work. That's why it sleeps warm and why turning over feels like effort. Latex springs back the moment you move and its pinhole structure lets air pass through, so it stays cool and you're never fighting the bed. Latex also lasts a decade or more. Most memory foam is soft and sagging inside three to five years.

    help

What's the difference between Talalay and Dunlop?

Two ways of making the same material. Dunlop is denser and firmer, which makes it better for support, so we use it in toppers and firmer pillows. Talalay is whipped lighter and has a softer, springier feel, which suits pillows where you want your head to settle in. Neither is better. They're for different jobs.

    help

Is "natural latex" actually natural, or is that marketing?

Fair question, because plenty of brands say natural and mean 30% latex blended with synthetic foam. Ours is 100% natural latex, and where a product is GOLS or GOTS certified we say so on that specific product page rather than slapping the badge across the whole site. Certification is per product, not per brand, and anyone telling you otherwise is being loose with it.

    help

    Does latex smell?

Slightly, for the first few days. It's a faint milky smell from the rubber sap, and it fades with airing. It isn't the chemical smell you get off new memory foam, which is off-gassing solvents. Unbox it, leave it a day, and you won't notice it after that.

    help

I have a latex allergy. Can I use these?

Latex allergies react to proteins in raw sap, and those proteins are washed out during manufacturing, so reactions to finished latex bedding are rare. Our products are OEKO-TEX tested and the latex sits inside a cotton cover, so your skin doesn't touch it directly. If you have a diagnosed latex allergy, check with your doctor before ordering rather than taking our word for it.

    help

What if I don't get on with it?

You get 30 nights to find out, and if it isn't right we take it back and refund you. Returns are free. It genuinely takes a couple of weeks to adjust to a new sleep surface, so we'd say give it at least 21 nights before deciding.
