Can a Mattress Topper Fix a Sagging Mattress? The Honest Answer
A topper can soften a slight dip. It can't rebuild the support of a sagging mattress. Here is how to tell which you have.
The short version
- A topper changes the surface, not the support underneath, so it settles into a deep dip. Under 2.5 cm: turn or rotate, then a supportive topper can bridge it. 2.5 cm or more: check the base and the guarantee first; a topper only buys time. Over 4 cm: replace. Check your mattress here.

The short answer: a topper can bridge a slight dip, but it cannot fix a mattress that has sagged. A topper changes how the surface feels. It doesn't add support underneath you, so on a deep dip it settles into the same hollow and your hips still drop. We sell toppers and we would rather tell you that now than have you send one back.

First, measure the dip
- Strip the bed back to the mattress.
- Lay a straight broom handle across it where you sleep.
- Measure the biggest gap under the handle. A 10p coin is about 2.5 cm wide, if you don't have a tape measure.
| Dip | What it means | Will a topper help? |
|---|---|---|
| Under 2.5 cm | Normal body impressions | Yes. Turn or rotate first, then a supportive topper bridges the rest |
| 2.5 to 4 cm | The support is going | Only as a stop-gap. Check the base and guarantee first |
| Over 4 cm | The support has failed | No. Replace the mattress |

Is it the base?
Broken, bowed or widely spaced slats, or a divan sinking in the middle, show through any mattress. Lift the mattress and look. Better still, lay it on the floor for a night: if the dip disappears, the base was the problem, and new slats cost far less than a new mattress.
Is it under guarantee?
A mattress a couple of years old should not dip deeply. Many guarantees treat a dip past a set depth as a fault. Photograph it with the broom handle and tape measure in shot, find your receipt, and contact the retailer or maker before you spend a penny. Replacing a young mattress yourself throws away one you've barely used and can't resell.
When a topper is worth it on a dipped mattress
- The dip is shallow and the mattress is otherwise sound.
- You have turned or rotated it, so you are sleeping on the less-worn end.
- You choose a supportive topper, not a soft one. A plush layer sinks into the hollow. A medium-firm natural latex layer, 5 to 7.5 cm deep, holds its shape and evens out the surface. Our Supportive toppers are made for this.
- You treat it as time, not a cure. On a 2.5 to 4 cm dip, a topper can buy a year or two while you save for the right mattress rather than the cheapest one.
Why some toppers make it worse
Soft memory foam and fibre toppers follow whatever is under them, and they develop their own body impressions over time. Put one on a dipped mattress and you get two dips. Latex springs back instead of taking a set, which is why it handles this job better. More in toppers that won't sag.
When it is time to let it go
Over 4 cm, springs you can feel, or a dip in a mattress past ten years: replace it. Read how often you should replace a mattress, and when the old one goes, here is how to dispose of it responsibly.
