Which Latex Topper Depth Is Best for Changing the Feel of an Old Mattress?
Depth decides how much of the work the topper does and how much is left to your mattress. Pick too thin and nothing changes. Pick too deep and you pay for latex you didn't need. Here is how to get it right first time.

The short answer
The short answer: 2 inch for most, 3 inch for big changes
For an old mattress that is still flat but feels wrong, 5 cm (2 inch) is the right depth for most people. Go to 7.5 cm (3 inch) if the mattress is very firm or you want the topper to do most of the work. Choose 2.5 cm (1 inch) if you only want a cooler, slightly kinder surface.
No depth will level a mattress with a visible dip. Run the integrity audit before you buy.

- 2 inch / 5 cm
- Biggest change
- 3 inch / 7.5 cm

Latex topper depths compared
| Depth | What it changes | Best for | Bed height added | Handling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 inch / 2.5 cm | The surface. Cooler and a little kinder | A good mattress that runs warm or feels slightly hard | About 2.5 cm | Light, easy to turn |
| 2 inch / 5 cm | The feel. A clear change in softness or support | Most tired or too-firm mattresses that are still flat | About 5 cm | Manageable for one person in smaller sizes |
| 3 inch / 7.5 cm | Most of the comfort. The topper takes over from the mattress | Very firm mattresses, side sleepers with broad shoulders, heavier sleepers | About 7.5 cm, check sheet depth | Heavy in King and Super-King, two people to fit |
Start with what is wrong with your mattress
| What you notice | Depth | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| It feels hard, shoulders or hips ache on your side | 2 or 3 inch | Plush |
| It feels too soft or a bit tired, but it is flat | 2 inch | Supportive |
| You wake up hot | 1 or 2 inch | Either |
| Faint body impressions you can feel but not see | 2 inch | Supportive |
| A dip you can see, or a sag in the middle | None | A topper follows the dip. Rotate or replace the mattress |
Your weight and position change the answer
The heavier you are, the further you press through a topper into the mattress underneath. A lighter person may feel 2 inches as a big change; a heavier person may feel the same layer as subtle. As a rough guide, if you are above average weight or share the bed with someone who is, go one depth deeper than the table suggests.
Side sleepers need more depth than back sleepers, because the shoulder and hip have to sink in. Front sleepers usually do best with 1 or 2 inches, as deep soft layers let the hips drop.
Practical things depth changes
- Sheets: a 3 inch topper on a deep mattress may need deep-pocket fitted sheets.
- Delivery: toppers arrive rolled. Give a 3 inch topper a little longer to fully recover its shape.
- Lifting: latex is dense. A 3 inch King or Super-King is a two-person job to fit.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 2 inch latex topper enough?
For most mattresses that are still flat, yes. It is deep enough to change how the bed feels, without the weight and cost of 3 inches.
Is a 3 inch topper too thick?
Not if your mattress is very firm or you are a side sleeper with broad shoulders. It adds about 7.5 cm of height, so check your fitted sheets.
Is a 1 inch latex topper worth it?
If your mattress is fine and you want a cooler, slightly softer surface, yes. If your mattress feels properly hard or tired, 1 inch will be too little.
Can I stack two thinner toppers instead of one thick one?
You can, but layers can shift against each other. One topper of the right depth is easier to live with.
Will a thicker topper fix a sagging mattress?
No. A topper follows the shape underneath. If you can see a dip, rotate the mattress, and if the dip stays, it is time to replace it. Our integrity audit helps you decide.
