Why marketing labels lie

In the bedding industry, "Firm" is a relative term. A firm mattress from a bed-in-a-box brand might feel like a medium-soft to someone used to a traditional pocket-sprung bed. This ambiguity is intentional; it allows manufacturers to use cheaper, lower-density foams while hiding behind vague descriptors.

At Not Swiss Cheese, we believe in evidence-first sleep. To compare a natural latex mattress topper against a memory foam alternative, you have to look at the lab data. The two metrics that matter are ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) and Density (kg/m³).

The benchmark chart: translating feel into specs

This chart translates standard marketing tiers into objective ILD and Density measurements for natural latex. These figures are based on standard 4-inch (10cm) core testing samples. If you want the plain-English version of any term below, our mattress jargon buster decodes it.

These benchmarks apply to 100% natural latex. Synthetic blends and memory foams use different scales and often require higher densities to achieve the same durability.

1. What is ILD? (Indentation Load Deflection)

ILD is the industry standard for measuring the hardness or firmness of a material. To find the ILD, a laboratory takes a 50 sq. inch circular plate and presses it into a 4-inch thick block of latex.

The ILD number is the amount of weight (in pounds) required to compress that block by exactly 25% (1 inch).

  • Low ILD (e.g. 14): only 14 lbs of pressure is needed to compress the material. It feels soft and cloud-like.
  • High ILD (e.g. 38): it takes 38 lbs of pressure to compress it. It feels rigid and highly supportive.

When you buy a Talalay latex pillow, you are usually choosing a lower ILD (14–19) for the head and neck, whereas a mattress core will use a much higher ILD (30+). Our guide to pillow height and cervical spine health explains how loft and ILD work together.

2. Density: the durability metric

While ILD tells you how it feels today, Density tells you how it will feel in five years. Density is measured in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³).

In the world of natural latex, density and firmness are closely linked because we do not use chemical bulking agents or fillers. To make the latex firmer, we simply use more of it.

The density correlation

A firm topper with low density is a red flag. It means the material has been mechanically aerated or chemically manipulated to feel firm, but it lacks the physical mass to support you. It will likely sag within 18 months.

3. The support factor (compression modulus)

This is the technical spec that mattress geeks look for. The Support Factor is the ratio of weight needed to compress the latex by 65% versus 25%.

Why it matters: a material with a high support factor feels soft when you first lie on it (25% compression) but gets significantly firmer as you sink deeper (65% compression). Natural latex has a naturally high support factor (usually 2.5 to 3.0), which is why it provides responsive support that memory foam — which often has a lower ratio — cannot match. Dunlop vs Talalay: same ILD, different feel

You might see a Dunlop latex pillow and a Talalay pillow both rated at 20 ILD. They will not feel identical.

  • Dunlop latex: denser and more solid. Because of the way it settles during manufacturing, it has a slight firm-base feel. A 20 ILD Dunlop topper feels slightly more supportive.
  • Talalay latex: more consistent and bouncy, with a more open-cell structure. A 20 ILD Talalay topper feels more like a plush cushion.

FAQ: firmness & physics

Does a higher ILD mean the mattress will last longer?

Not necessarily. Longevity is tied to density. However, because natural latex achieves firmness by increasing density, a firm natural latex topper (85 kg/m³) will have more raw material than a soft one (65 kg/m³). Both will outlast memory foam, but the higher-density versions are the most resilient.

I am a side sleeper. What ILD should I look for?

Side sleepers need pressure relief for shoulders and hips. We typically recommend an ILD between 14 and 22. This lets the heavy points of your body sink in while the latex pushes back to keep your spine straight. Our guide for side sleepers and our side sleeper pillow collection go further.

Can I compare ILD between memory foam and latex?

It is difficult. Memory foam is viscoelastic, meaning its firmness changes with your body heat and how long you stay in one spot. Latex is instantaneous — it does not care about heat. What is GOLS certification and does it affect firmness?

GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) ensures the material is at least 95% certified organic raw latex. While it does not dictate firmness, it ensures that the density you are paying for is actual rubber, not cheap clay fillers or synthetic foaming agents that break down over time.
