The 3 AM mystery
Waking up at 3 AM in a damp sweat is not usually a medical mystery. For most UK sleepers, it is a failure of materials. Your body temperature needs to drop by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius to initiate and maintain deep sleep. This is called the circadian dip.
If your mattress or pillow traps that escaping heat, your core temperature stays elevated. Your brain interprets this as a signal to stay alert. You wake up, kick the duvet off, wait to cool down, and repeat the cycle 90 minutes later. Interpreting your results
The Heat Sink (micro-climate)
The cause: if you answered mostly A, your mattress is likely a closed-cell structure. Memory foam is a petrochemical product that uses your body heat to soften — it literally harvests your warmth to work. Once it has contoured to you, it acts as an insulator, reflecting your own 37°C heat back into your skin.
The fix: you need an open-cell material that allows vertical airflow. Natural latex toppers provide the same pressure relief without the heat-trapping chemistry.
The Greenhouse (environment)
The cause: if your partner is also hot and the room feels thick, your issue is ambient. Many UK homes are built to retain heat, which is great in February but disastrous in July. If humidity is high, your sweat cannot evaporate — and evaporation is the only way your body actually cools down.

Why the pinhole design matters
During the manufacturing of our Dunlop and Talalay latex, the liquid rubber is poured into a mould with thousands of metal pins. These pins conduct heat to bake the latex evenly, but they leave behind a permanent network of vertical air channels.
Every time you move, these channels act like a bellows, pushing warm air out and pulling cooler air in. Memory foam cannot do this because it is a solid mass. Why do I wake up hot even when the room is cold?
This is the classic heat-sink effect. Even if the air in your room is 16°C, the two inches of foam directly under your torso are trapped between your body (37°C) and the mattress core. Without airflow, that foam equalises with your body temperature, preventing your core from dropping into deep sleep.
Is Talalay latex cooler than Dunlop latex?
Slightly. Talalay latex has a more consistent, airy cell structure due to the vacuum flash-freeze process used in manufacturing. It is often preferred for pillows (like our Talalay medium-soft) because it feels more buoyant and breathable.
