Work out what your mattress really costs
Enter what you paid and how long you expect it to last. The calculator spreads the cost — including replacements and disposal — across a 20-year horizon, then compares it to a long-life natural latex set-up.
Your current stats
Industry average for foam is around 5.7 years before significant sag.
What it really costs
This calculation includes replacement and disposal costs. It does not include the physical cost of back pain.
See the GOLS-certified rangeThe sticker price is a lie
In the UK, the mattress-in-a-box boom has conditioned us to look at the sticker price as the total cost of ownership. It is not. When you buy a £500 memory foam mattress, you are not buying a decade of sleep; you are buying a four-to-six year lease on a material that begins to degrade the moment it is unrolled.
Memory foam is a petrochemical product. It relies on chemical bonds that soften with heat — your body heat. Over time those bonds do not just soften; they break. This is called viscoelastic creep, but you probably know it as that giant dent in the middle of the bed. Once the sag starts, the support ends. Your spine moves out of alignment, your neck starts to ache, and you are back on Google looking for a replacement. Our post on 5 signs your pillow needs replacing covers the same failure curve at pillow scale.
The replacement cycle trap
If you buy a conventional mattress for £600 and replace it every 6 years (the average UK replacement cycle for synthetic beds), you will spend £2,100 over 20 years, excluding disposal fees and the inevitable price rises of future models.
Compare that to a GOLS-certified organic natural latex mattress. While the upfront cost might be £1,600, a high-density latex core is rated to last 20+ years without losing more than 1% of its height. Your cost per year drops to £80. You save cash, and you save yourself three separate trips to the tip. The firmness benchmarks behind that durability claim are in our ILD and density guide.
Why natural latex lasts (the science of resilience)
At Not Swiss Cheese we do not sell luxury. We sell high-density rubber tree sap. The difference in longevity comes down to the cellular structure of the material.
Synthetic memory foam
Structure: closed-cell polyurethane foam.
Failure point: oxidation and moisture breakdown. Foam cells collapse under repeated pressure and heat, leading to permanent impressions (sagging).
Typical life: 5–8 years.
Evidence: notice how memory foam feels dead when you press it? It lacks the mechanical push-back needed for long-term structural integrity.
Organic natural latex
Structure: open-pinhole vulcanised rubber.
Failure point: very slow natural hardening over decades. Because it is an elastomer, it returns to its original shape millions of times without cellular collapse.
Typical life: 20–25 years.
Evidence: our organic latex toppers use materials that remain responsive long after synthetic foams have turned to dust. See also natural vs synthetic latex.

Frequently asked questions about mattress value
Why is natural latex so much more expensive upfront?
Harvesting sap from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) is labour-intensive. It takes a tree years to produce enough sap for a single mattress. GOLS certification also ensures fair wages, organic farming and no fillers. You are not paying for a brand name — you are paying for the raw cost of a superior, sustainable material.
Can I just buy a topper to save money?
Yes. If your current mattress is still structurally sound but lacks comfort or runs hot, a natural latex topper is the most cost-effective way to reset your sleep. However, if your mattress has a 5cm dip in the middle, a topper will follow that dip. Fix the foundation first. See the benefits of a mattress topper.
What is the difference between Dunlop and Talalay latex in terms of value?
Dunlop is denser and usually more durable for mattress cores. Talalay undergoes an extra vacuum and flash-freeze process, making it softer and more consistent — perfect for pillows. Both outlast synthetic foams, but Dunlop is often the value king for longevity. Check our Talalay guide for more detail.
Is it true that latex mattresses are heavy?
Yes. Real natural latex is dense because it is not puffed up with air or chemical fillers. That makes it harder to move, and it is also the reason it does not sag. In the mattress world, weight is usually a proxy for material density — see our ILD and density benchmarks.
