Can a Natural Latex Topper Relieve Pressure on Your Hips and Shoulders?

A plain-English look at the evidence on latex and pressure relief, its limits, and how to choose a topper if your hips and shoulders ache.

The short version

  • Natural latex may help spread pressure on hips and shoulders, especially for side sleepers on a firm mattress; the evidence is encouraging but limited.
  • Want to know if a topper would help your hips on your mattress? Run the free mattress check: it sizes feel and depth to your weight and sleeping position.

The short answer: it may well help, especially if you sleep on your side on a mattress that feels firm. A lab study found natural latex spread body pressure more evenly than polyurethane foam in every sleeping position it tested. But that study was small and short, it tested mattresses rather than toppers, and it measured pressure, not pain or sleep. So the honest answer is "probably helps, for the right person", not "proven to fix".

Why hips and shoulders take the strain

When you lie on your side, most of your weight rests on two narrow points: one shoulder and one hip. On a firm surface those points take a lot of pressure, which is why side sleepers on hard beds often wake with a sore shoulder, an aching hip or a dead arm. A good comfort layer lets those two points sink in a little while holding your waist and ribs up, so your weight spreads over a bigger area and your spine stays straight.

What the research says

The most relevant study we know of was published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine in 2017 by a team at the National University of Singapore. Twenty healthy adults lay on a latex foam mattress and a polyurethane foam mattress, on their back, side and front, while a pressure mat recorded contact pressure.

  • Latex gave lower peak pressure than polyurethane in every region measured.
  • Lying on the side, peak pressure at the torso (which included the upper arm and shoulder) was about 35% lower on latex, and at the buttocks about 28% lower.
  • On latex, a larger share of the body sat in the lowest pressure band: roughly 91 to 96% of contact area, against 82 to 92% on polyurethane.

What it doesn't prove

We would rather you knew the limits before you spend money.

  • It was tiny and short. Twenty young, pain-free adults, six minutes per position. The authors themselves say a longer test would be more realistic.
  • It compared latex with polyurethane foam, not with memory foam, springs, wool or feather.
  • It measured pressure, not comfort, pain or sleep. Lower pressure is a sensible goal, but the study didn't show that people slept better or hurt less.
  • It tested mattresses, not toppers. A topper sits on your existing mattress, so what is underneath still matters.

So: encouraging, consistent with what side sleepers tell us, and not a medical claim.

How to choose a topper for sore hips and shoulders

  1. Check the mattress first. If it sags, a topper will sit in the dip and your hips will still drop. Our 10-point mattress integrity audit takes twenty minutes.
  2. Choose a softer feel if your bed is firm. Our Plush (medium soft) lets your shoulder and hip settle in. If your mattress is already soft, choose Supportive so your hips don't sink too far. More in softening a firm mattress.
  3. Give it enough depth. 5 cm (2 inch) suits most people; 7.5 cm (3 inch) helps broad-shouldered or heavier side sleepers. See the depth guide.
  4. Sort your pillow too. A pillow that is too low drops your head and rolls your top shoulder forward. Use our pillow height finder.

When to see someone

If hip or shoulder pain lasts more than a few weeks, wakes you at night whatever you lie on, or comes with numbness, swelling or weakness, please see your GP or a physiotherapist. A topper can make a bed kinder. It can't diagnose or treat a joint problem.
