3 Inch Latex Mattress Topper: The Deep Relief Guide
A 7.5cm layer of GOLS-certified organic latex does not just soften a bed. It changes how your body meets the mattress underneath. No heat-trapping foam, no chemical off-gassing, just a material you can measure.
This is the depth you choose when softening the surface is not enough, and the bed needs genuine give.

Why 3 inches (7.5cm)?
In bedding, depth decides function. Each thickness does a different job, and the right one depends on what your mattress is doing wrong rather than on which number sounds most generous.
- 1 inch (2.5cm): a surface change. Adds a cool, natural layer and takes the edge off a slightly unforgiving mattress, without altering the height of the bed much.
- 2 inch (5cm): a comfort adjustment. The right pick when the mattress is fundamentally sound and you want it kinder.
- 3 inch (7.5cm): a restorative intervention. This is the depth where the latex takes over the work from an ageing or stubbornly firm mattress, giving what the trade calls deep compression support.
Not sure which problem you actually have? Run our ten-point mattress integrity audit first. It will tell you whether the core is still sound, which is the difference between a topper fixing your bed and a topper following its dip.
Side sleeper support
Sleeping on your side means your shoulder and hip need to travel further for your spine to stay neutral. 7.5cm of organic latex gives those pressure points somewhere to go before they reach the hard surface below.
See also our side sleeper pillows, since the two work together.
Firm mattress fix
Bought a bed that feels like a floorboard? A 3-inch topper becomes a second comfort layer, landing you at a medium feel that balances surface softness against the push-back of the core.
Browse firm toppers or plush toppers depending on which way you need to go.
Joint and hip relief
Memory foam collapses as it warms. Latex stays resilient, so it floats the body rather than swallowing it, easing the pressure on hips and lower backs that has you turning over at four in the morning.
More on this in our topper for back pain guide.
The material, in specifics
We do not lean on the word orthopaedic, because in the UK it is not a regulated term and anyone can print it on a label. We would rather talk about density, cell structure and certificates. Our 3-inch toppers are GOLS-certified organic natural latex with a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover.
If the label language on your current topper is doing the heavy lifting, our jargon buster translates it.
Dunlop or Talalay at this depth?
At 7.5cm the manufacturing process matters more than it does in a thin layer.
- Dunlop: denser and more durable. In a 7.5cm depth it gives a stable, substantial feel and holds support evenly across the whole surface. This is what we use in the Organic Topper, and it is the easier of the two to certify organic.
- Talalay: airier, with a more consistent cell structure from the vacuum and flash-freeze process. Wonderful in a pillow or a thin layer, but at three inches most people prefer Dunlop for the support it holds over years.
The full comparison is in our Dunlop versus Talalay guide.
Open-pinhole airflow
Natural latex is perforated by the way it is made. During vulcanisation, metal pins leave thousands of vertical air channels behind. Memory foam insulates, holding your heat so it can soften. Latex does the opposite and lets air move through it, which is why it is the sensible pick for a cooling mattress topper.
If overheating is your main complaint, start with our sleep temperature diagnostic.
Plush or Supportive?
Both come in the full 7.5cm depth, at the same price. The choice is about your sleeping position and weight, not about quality. If you want the measured numbers behind these words, our ILD and density map sets out what each firmness band actually means.
Plush (medium soft)
The softer of the two. Best if you sleep on your side, you are lighter framed, or the mattress underneath is genuinely hard and you want the topper doing most of the cushioning.
Think pressure relief first, structure second.
Supportive (medium firm)
The firmer of the two. Best if you sleep on your back or front, you are heavier framed, or the mattress has started to dip and you need the topper to add structure rather than softness.
Think structure first, cushioning second. This is the one most people with morning back stiffness end up on.
How it compares at the same 3-inch depth
Most mattress-in-a-box brands sell polyurethane foam, which is a petrochemical product. Here is the honest trade-off at the same thickness. The cost side of it is laid out in our 20-year value calculator.
| Feature | Not Swiss Cheese latex (3 inch) | Memory foam (3 inch) | Budget egg-box foam |
|---|---|---|---|
| Responsiveness | Instant spring-back | Slow, sink-hole feel | Low resilience |
| Temperature | Breathable, passively cool | Traps body heat | Neutral to warm |
| Lifespan | 10 to 15 years | 3 to 5 years | 1 to 2 years |
| Toxicity | GOLS organic, no VOC off-gassing | Off-gasses chemicals | High chemical content |
| Support | Active and buoyant | Passive, collapses with heat | Minimal |

What to check before you buy a 7.5cm topper
A 3-inch organic topper is a real purchase, so it is worth three minutes of due diligence. Ask any retailer for these. If they will not tell you, assume there is a reason.
- Certification. GOLS, the Global Organic Latex Standard, means at least 95% organic raw latex rather than a natural and synthetic blend. For the cover, GOTS.
- Density. Roughly 60 to 65 kg/m³ for a plush feel and 80 to 85 kg/m³ for medium firm. Much lower and a 7.5cm layer will bottom out under your hips. Our ILD and density map has the full ranges.
- Cover material. Avoid polyester. A three-inch organic topper deserves GOTS-certified organic cotton or wool, or you cancel out the breathability you paid for. It should also come off and go in the machine, because the latex core itself must never be washed.
We name each certificate against the exact component it covers, GOLS on the latex core and GOTS on the cotton cover, because organic ought to mean something specific rather than something general.
About the new-bed smell
Synthetic foam arrives with a chemical odour, which is off-gassing. Natural latex has a faint sweet smell, somewhere between vanilla and a rubber band, and it fades within a few days of airing. It is the smell of something grown in a plantation rather than mixed in a factory.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a 2-inch or a 3-inch topper?
If the mattress is mostly fine and you want it kinder, 2 inches (5cm) is plenty. Choose 3 inches (7.5cm) if the mattress is too firm, you are a dedicated side sleeper, or you are over about 90kg (14 stone), because that is the depth that stops you bottoming out against the hard surface underneath.
Should I pick Plush or Supportive?
Side sleepers and lighter frames usually want Plush, which lets the shoulder and hip sink. Back and front sleepers, heavier frames, and anyone whose mattress has begun to dip usually want Supportive, which adds structure. Both come in the full 7.5cm and cost the same, so it is purely about fit.
Will a 3-inch topper make my bed too tall for my sheets?
7.5cm is a real addition. Most UK fitted sheets have a pocket depth of 25cm to 30cm, so if your mattress is already deep you will want extra-deep sheets of 35cm or more to cover mattress and topper together. Worth checking before it arrives rather than after.
Is it better for back pain or neck pain?
Primarily back and hip pain, because it changes how your spine is supported. For neck pain, look at your pillow height first, and our Talalay pillow guide covers that. A topper still helps indirectly, by letting your shoulder drop and easing the shrugging that creates neck tension.
How do I clean it?
Latex is naturally antimicrobial and resists dust mites. Never wash the latex core itself. Use the removable organic cotton cover, which is washable, and spot clean spills with a damp cloth and mild soap. Keep it out of direct sunlight, because UV breaks natural latex down. Our guide to cleaning a mattress properly covers the bed underneath.
How long will it actually last?
Ten to fifteen years is realistic for high-density natural latex, against three to five for memory foam. That gap is the whole argument: the cost per year is lower even though the sticker price is higher. Our 20-year value calculator lets you run your own numbers.
